Why it’s difficult to turn teens into safer drivers

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

A quick look at fatal accident statistics tells you that teenagers are involved in a disproportionate amount of these crashes. This is the reason that they are often considered dangerous drivers and why they have such high insurance premiums.

So why isn’t more being done to make them safe drivers? It’s a valid question, and driver’s ed classes try to make young drivers as safe as possible before they go out on the road. However, there’s one big reason why teens continuously have such daunting statistics.

The problem is their inexperience

The trouble is that inexperience is one of the leading causes of teen car accidents. You can usually trace the crash back to another cause, such as driving too fast for conditions or not leaving a large enough following distance, but the reason for that mistake is that the teen is inexperienced. They may not have even realized they were making a mistake until they caused the crash.

However, experience is only gained through driving more often. There’s no way to get a teenager more experience without putting them behind the wheel. As such, society is always going to have to deal with teenagers who cause car accidents while they learn. Even moving the driving age up wouldn’t change anything because it would just mean that older drivers were inexperienced.

Have you been injured in a car accident?

Since there’s always going to be a risk someone injures you in a car accident, it is important for you to understand all of the legal options to seek compensation if this happens to you. Working with an experienced team can help.
