Responding safely to a tailgater

On Behalf of | May 11, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

There are few things more intimidating on the road than a car that’s following too closely behind you. Not only could they crash into the back of you, but they could force you to make an error that you would not have otherwise made.

There are numerous ways that you could react to such a scenario. How do you respond safely to a tailgater?

What not to do

You’re outraged by the driver behind you, and this is natural. It’s important not to respond with aggression, though. Many drivers make the mistake of slamming on their brakes in an attempt to make the other driver slow down. This will most likely escalate the situation. You don’t want to speed up either. If you’re abiding by the law, then it isn’t you who needs to make speed adjustments. Stay calm and think about the following steps.

What to do

The best course of action is to let the tailgating driver pass you in a safe manner. Give them as much space to overtake you as is practical. If this isn’t an option, consider pulling over at the next suitable area. Take your time, regain your composure and complete your journey in one piece. If you remember any details about the car, such as the make, model or registration number, then you may want to consider filing a report with the appropriate authorities.

If you’ve been injured because of someone else’s poor driving practices, there are a number of options open to you. One thing you definitely want to consider is seeking compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering.
